This first session will be really easy. Based on a recent book by Jack Hanson called You've Got to Read this Book (which you don't need to read), you are invited to share with us details of a book (or books) that has/have changed your life, or has impacted you greatly at some point. This will be a fine opportunity for the list makers among us who are always looking for more great reads, especially the ones that might have escaped our bedside pile. Open to everyone; no charge. Friday September 14 at 7:00 pm at The Library: Slide Show and Talk The Last Stand: A Journey through the Ancient Cliff-face Forest of the Niagara Escarpment Co-author Peter Kelly will present his remarkable new book The Last Stand on the big screen at The Library. As Andrew said recently in his enthusiastic review, "The Last Stand is a beautiful book, shot through with full colour, striking photographs of cliffs, cedars and those who discover them. It's an adventure story, a lesson in ecology and a close up look at the cliffs that surround us every day. After reading it, you will never again take that rampart of rock for granted." Peter will be presenting photographs taken during his 17 years of research on the Niagara Escarpment cliff face. Learn more about this amazing place in which we live. No charge; autographed copies of The Last Stand ($39.95) can be reserved in advance at 519 376-4233. Thursday September 20 at 3:00 pm: Bridge I miss bridge! This year we're converting bridge into an informal daytime activity which we're hoping will be more convenient for more players. Join us if you can whatever your skill level: every four people will get their own table and a couple of decks of cards. Laughs are guaranteed. Coffee/tea and desserts will be available and we won't send you home until 6:00. Thursday September 27 at 7:00 pm: Book Launch Brian Barrie used to make up bedtime stories for his children. Now they're grown and he has made one of their favorites into a book. Bonita Johnson de Matteis of Going North fame has illustrated it with beautiful watercolours. Set in Owen Sound, the story is entirely fictional, but the pictures show the real beauty of our city. The Neighbour That Wasn't, a children's picture book self published by the author, will be launched at 7:00 pm Thursday September 27. Available in either a handbound limited edition hardcover ($40) or a softcover ($24.95), signed copies of The Neighbour That Wasn't can be reserved at 519 376-4233. A portion of the hardcover sales will be donated to the Caron Cooper Scholarship to assist young people with registration at art classes at the Tom Thomson Gallery. The original paintings from the book will be on exhibit. Everyone is welcome to attend this book launch; there are even rumours of a ginger snap bake-off to take place during the launch. No charge. Friday September 28 at 8:00 am: Breakfast Talk with Leigh Greaves Although heartbroken that Leigh is retiring and closing her business Artemisia, we are delighted that she has agreed to be our breakfast speaker. Is it so insane that you've stopped keeping track of it, and started allowing other people's deadlines to dictate your immediate tasks and scheduling? It's time to get back in control! In this half-day workshop you will create a paper-based brain that is perfect for you. That's right, Emma will teach you how to make an organizer that will change your life. This workshop will be useful for everyone who wants to get more stuff off their to-do list and onto their finished pile. From being efficient at getting homework done, to finding clarity in the office grind, making room for another client in your practice, and achieving peace, productivity and alliteration post-retirement, the Life Organizing Workshop is for you. Emma Hogbin (Internet consultant, conference chair of HICK Tech and craft teacher to all) will lead you through the productivity tools she uses to keep her life and her work organized and efficient. She will help you stay on top of your projects, your daily schedule and your email inbox. Emma will also talk about life planning: from the bottom up (Getting Things Done/David Allen); from the top down (7 Habits/Stephen Covey) and why she uses a fountain pen and paper to keep her life organized even though she carries a blackberry and works as an on-line community builder. Register now ($25 + materials) by return email, phone (376-4233) or in person. Friday October 26 at 8:00 am: Breakfast with the Mayor In what has become our annual check-in with Mayor Ruth Lovell, we'll learn what she's been up to and what she has planned for the next year.
