Sincerely yours, Keith Wilson   Keith Wilson’s "Miramichi River Report" Karl shoots a nice 8 point too Posted by Keith on 11 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report Karl shoots his first whitetail , a nice 8 point , 165 pound . The antlers are much smaller than mine and Gilberts but no one is complaining . Karl and I hunted the same area as Gilbert did because there were still plenty of does around and we knew the bucks had to show up during the peak of the rut . We hunted for three days seeing does and small spike horns but Karl had his heart set on a deer bigger than his Dads . On the last morning of the season he decided to try a stand that up till now he shyed away from and for good reason , Karl stands 6′.4″ weighing app. 240 pound , so when I suggested this little aluminum portable stand , which was perched in a small tree and leaning to the right just a little too far for his comfort , needless to say he was reluctant . But he climbed up anyway , and after slipping on the frost and nearly dropping his rifle he barley got set down when this little 8 point bolts across in front of him at just 60 yards . Karl nailed him good while on the run , making our total for the 2008 hunt at three . What a great season with tons of food and drink , late nights of talking and three of the guys bagging niice bucks . No Comments » -- Gilbert Bags His First Big NB Whitetail Posted by Keith on 11 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report My Friend from Ontario lucks out too . This beauty ( 13 point - 220 pound ) was taken after a week of hunting among spike- horns and does all over the area . Unlike my fluke ,Gilbert paid his dues by putting in hard time ( 5 days ) on the stand in the cold and rain . We decide to stay on one more night and hunt for an hour or so before heading home on day six . I was scheduled to pick him up at 9:am , but was late so he walked on down the trail to check out an area that we knew should have had deer feeding but saw nothing there all week . As Gilbert approached the area he stopped to scan the small cut with his glasses and as he finished the pan there standing stareing right into his eyes at app 100 yards was this huge whitetail . The deer bolted , he ran directly accross the cut allowing Gilbert barely time enough to get a shot off , but luck was on our side and he nailed the big boy on the run at 165 yards . No Comments » -- Whitetail Deer Hunt best in Years Posted by Keith on 11 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report Even though Wilson’s is not currently offering guide service on a commercial basis for whitetail deer but I thought some readers might be interested to see the results of my 2007 hunt . The season started out slow ,as did the previous ten years , with warm weather and very little sign . Getting into the second week Garrett and I were busy getting a couple stands built for my friend Gilbert from Ontario to join me for the third week . We found an area that showed promise of several does working two small clear-cuts along a brook . After a closer look we found more deer there than first expected , giving us hope that a big buck or two would show up during the rut . Every now and then a hunter has a storey to tell that sounds just too easy , and this year it was me who had the charm . On my first day of carrying a rifle I left our area to check for sign in a new location when as I arrived I saw three does cross the road ahead of me . At app. 5 pm I pulled up in my Chevy truck , checked out the tracks on the road and decided to hang out there till dark ( 6:30 Pm ) . I gave my grunt call a couple blows and within 30 minutes I spotted just one spike from his antler moving very slowly parrallel to me . He was in small white pine trees app. 8 feet high , thus conceiling himself very well . As he moved along I could see just an antler now and then , he was literally crouching along like a cat , obviously trying to get down wind of me . Ten minutes later he finally poked his head out from behind a larger pine tree , I picked him up in my scope , Leopold Vari X V , Gold Ring , mounted on my trusty Remington Model 760 , 30.06 pump , but to my surprise I could see only his head and tail . I had no shot at all and he was looking straight at me with his nose in the air , I held a moment longer and he finally took one step , exposing his neck . I squeezed off a round at 100 yards and he dropped in his tracks . To make things seem even easier I only had to back my pick-up truck up to the side of the road , drop the tail gate , laid out lumber that was left from my stand construction and within ten minutes had the big boy secured on the back . What a beauty , 8 points , 23 inch spread and field dressed 210 pound , my personal best . No Comments » -- Spectacular scene on the Cains River Posted by Keith on 22 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report I had the most amazing sight of my life on Thursday Oct 18th on the Cains River. We watch trout spawn there every year but this time was different . The trout were there in greater numbers than I have ever seen before and the sun was at the perfect angle to see into the 18 inches of water . The fresh redds are easy to spot too on the dark river bottom and our vantage point is directly overhead at 15 feet off the water . A large hen ( all sea-run brookies ) was in the redd with a huge 5-7 pound male , then on the outer edges were several males in the 3-4 pound range and down river app 3 feet were numerous smaller males in the 12-16 inch size . A total of app. 15 fish .The hen would work the redd and then we would actually see her drop the eggs while the large male would chase off the others , then come back in and do his duty , all the time with small males darting in and out bugging the crap out of the poor guy . Once in a while a 3-4 pounder would get in the action . This went on for several hours .It was spectacular to see this so clearly and most encouraging to see so many redds in action , must have been 15 or 20 females on the redds , all with this same action taking place . We could see two redds very clear from where we were and due to the water movement you could count easily the others up and down the shore as well . This is very encouraging for the Cains sea-run brook trout population , I have never seen this much action in that one area . Can’t wait for next year . 1 Comment » -- Big water brings big fish Posted by Keith on 14 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report The water on the Miramichi at McNamee is dropping nicely today and is much cleaner . As the water level drops it clears up quickly and of course the fishing usually turns on , as was the case for Claude Prior today with this beautiful 15 pound , fresh from the ocean hen fish . The water will drop off further tonight and we hope to see more fresh fish for our last day of the 2007 season . The weather is also shaping up very nicely for the coming week of upland hunting . No Comments » -- Sometimes we get what we ask for , just a little late Posted by Keith on 13 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report Well folks , we have all been praying for a good rain and raise of water and that is just what we got , a little late for anglers but still good for our fish and the watershed . The storm was brief but it sure did the job . At this point the water on the Miramichi at McNamee is up app. 20 inches and the Cains River is almost as high . With all the leaves coming off the trees and the high water picking up plenty more along the shores it is tough to make one cast without dragging in leaves . As soon as the river begins to drop the water will clear up nicely and we will surely get into some good fishing for the last couple of days of the season . The large fall patterns such as General Practitioner , LT Special , Chief Needabah , Chorus Girl and Allys Schrimp would be my fly’s of choice now . The Cains is shapeing up very well for the next couple of weeks too. There are reports of tons of big fish in at Black Brook so they won’t be long getting up to at least the Shinickburn area . There is not likely to be many fish above that though till after the end of the month when they move on up to spawn . It looks like the best of the Cains fishing this fall is going to be on the lower 15 miles . No Comments » -- First timers sometimes have all the luck Posted by Keith on 12 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report First time salmon angler Peter Bradford is probably thinking today , what is the big deal , just cast your fly on the water where the guide tells you to and watch the majic happen . On Peter’s first day he landed two fish in the 15 - 20 pound range and yesterday he pulled out our biggest fish of the year , a beautiful 46 inch hen , estimated weight 34 pound , and finished up his day with a grilse . We have been praying for rain and it looks like we are in for a real blast of fall weather . This nor-easter going through today and Saturday is supposed to dump nearly two inches of rain . The fishing will be tough today with the strong wind but maybe our last three days will be as good as this past couple weeks . Our upland hunters are welcoming this storm as well , the leaves will drop and more flight birds will be going through next week . No Comments » -- Just when you think you have it all figured out Posted by Keith on 11 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report Last week I e:mailed several guests suggesting they put off their fall trip because of the tough river conditions. Tom Young and Rod Handfield had their seven trip booked for months so decided to come anyway , if for nothing else the beautiful river and to see their friends . Yesterday Tom and Rod hooked 8 fish , two of which were nice salmon and three of the other boy’s landed a total of 4 fish . I guess you just never know . The river is still very low resulting in most pools on the river fishless . We are still not seeing new fish but lucky for Wilson’s we are having relatively good fishing due mainly to our good number of larger holding pools . There are some huge 30 pound plus salmon showing too , all older fish but we won’t complain at this point . Upland hunting yesterday was superb and conditions are improving daily . No Comments » -- Miramichi low , fishing slow Posted by Keith on 10 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report The Miramichi is very low and we have just a few new fish trickling in . Wilson’s still have a good number of fish holding in our larger pools but they are taking slow . The fish that we are hooking are coming to the fly very slow and seem to be grabbing just at the end of the swing .There are a few newer fish moving along but no signs of a good ” Fall Run ” yet . We are supposed to get heavy rain soon but it is getting late to do us much good . Our upland hunting is going well and with the nor-easter storm coming in it will surely bring in more flight birds . Grouse are on the upswing of their cycle so as the leaves drop and temps come down we should do very well on these guy’s too . No Comments » -- Tom Watson lucks out with a big Salmon at Wilson’s Posted by Keith on 05 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report Tom was another lucky angler this week landing this beautiful 25 pound hen fish at Big Murphy . He and Joe teamed up on two more grilse the same day . Water conditions are not good but we still have a fair number of older fish moving along . Rain is forecast for next week but propbably too late for the Miramichi . No Comments » -- Charles G. also lucks out with a big fish Posted by Keith on 03 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report Tough conditions but there is still hope of getting into a fish of a lifetime . Charles landed this 26 pound female and lost another even bigger . Unfortunately the fall run has not developed due to low water but for a few lucky anglers it does not seem to matter . 1 Comment » -- Low but still catching a few fish Posted by Keith on 02 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report The “fall run ” which is normally right on at this point in the season has obviously not made it into the system yet . Most areas are reporting very slow fishing over the “summer run fish ” that have been here for a while now . The low water is not helping things much but fortunately for Wilson’s guest’s we have enough pools to provide decent fishing dispite the current conditions . A group of eight rods landed 8 yesterday , one of which was 25 pound and they hooked and lost another 4 , today was almost as good . We are not seeing many fish moving and no fresh ones . The weather forecast is calling for a good rain on the upcoming weekend but that won’t do much good for seeing new fish till later on in the week , probably around the 10th or so . On a more positive note , our grouse numbers appear to be very high this fall and woodcock are showing up in good numbers as well . It is still too dry for best results on woodcock but as we enter the prime weeks with rain in the forecast our upland hunters will surley do much better than salmon anglers . No Comments » -- Johnston’s had a good trip to Wilson’s Posted by Keith on 02 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report “The Wilson Camp is a terrific spot for both the experienced angler and the first-timer. With the attentive support of our guide, Joe, we thoroughly enjoyed the Miramichi experience. Keith and Bonnie are wonderful hosts and the kitchen staff made sure we were very well fed! Accommodations are clean and comfortable. Overall, we had a terrific time and would highly recommend Wilson Sport Camps.” No Comments » -- Miramichi on the rise Posted by Keith on 28 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report It rained all night resulting in a start to a decent raise and also getting a little color back . The light dirt flowing is coloring it up which is as important as a rise . It does not look like we will get much more than 6 or 8 inches but it is badly needed and will surely move more fish . There are fish in all our pools but hooking up has been tough for the past few days . One fish hooked this morning on an Ally’s Schrimp . No Comments » -- Water getting down but fishing still fair Posted by Keith on 25 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report The water is getting down a little making some pools hard to fish but most are still doing well . The fish are slow to take for most anglers but some guy’s over the last weekend hit it good . Walter U. landed three nice salmon at Cold Water one morning .Fish are taking the small fly’s best . Rain is due for this week which will perk things up for sure . Keep your fingers crossed for the late Cains River run too , we will need a raise of water soon to get the fish up there . No Comments » -- The Ruckno party hit it big at Wilson’s Posted by Keith on 19 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report The Ruckno group hit it right on again this year . Upon arrival the water was up app 6 inches and there were fish in all pools . As the water dropped the boy’s got into them good . Hooked 20 fish in three days and landed 16 , a few of them over 15 pounds . Joe hooked and landed 1 grilse and 2 salmon on one AM shift . The guy’s are really enjoying the good fishing and the many pools along Wilson’s five mile stretch . It is nice to have several new pools to choose from each time out , it gives anglers a renewed enthusiasm when they know the pool has not been fished for a day or so and their fly is the first one over the fish that day . It seems that there is no one particular fly working best , small fly’s and even bombers are producing . No Comments » -- Miramichi is up , fish are moving Posted by Keith on 16 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report The water is up this morning 2 inches and looks like it will continue rising slowly for a few more hours . Yesterday was our best day in two weeks seeing fish in all of our pools . The boys got into several grilse and one nice MSW salmon . We have sunny skies forecast for the week but perfect temperatures . ( 14- 19 C ) No Comments » -- Not great but we are still catching every day Posted by Keith on 14 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report The water is once agin down to normal early fall level so with cool temps , good pools and fish in most of them your day at Wilson’s is still successful . And , we are catching a few big fish as well . The fish appear to be fairly fresh and the bigger salmon are showing up now . The best luck has been on small 10’s and 12’s and the most patient of anlgers are getting into fish on bombers too . Rain is forecast soon so with a raise of water the fall run will increase for sure . No Comments » -- A few fresh-run salmon moving Posted by Keith on 08 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report The river is in great shape as we enter the early fall period . The last raise of water ( Aug31 ) has stayed with us and fresh fish began to come in . Reports from down river are most encouraging , especially Shawn Betts landing a huge 49 inch hen salmon just two days ago . Our biggest salmon two years ago was a 32 pounder taken on Sept 10th , so anytime from now on out you can expect to be over some very large fish . We are due for one more day of very hot weather then a cold front and rain is coming . Some of the local die- hard anglers are picking up a few fish on small 10’s with long leaders . EJ and guest landed a nice grilse yesterday at Big Murphy on a small Undertaker . No Comments » -- Big water on the Miramichi Posted by Keith on 01 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: Miramichi River Report What began as a nice little 10 inch raise on Friday ended up being approximately 20 inches of water by this morning . The river is also very dirty so the big fly’s are coming out . Lucky for us in the McNamee area with our many islands and a number of pools that fish best in high water , this big water does not kill the fishing completely . As soon as the dirt clears out a bit and the water begins to drop we will be into fish . Our 28 foot cedar strip jet propelled canoe is a real asset for getting anglers to the best spots and our guides know all the tricks on how to adapt to these conditions . This is exactly what we like to see coming into the fall season , high water , cool temps and a long range weather forecast that looks like it was written by a lodge owner .
